What's on your packing list SAS folks? Did I miss anything?
Really great list! My only suggestion in the likely event of running short of space or weight would be to leave out common toiletries and snacks (not a brand you're picky about) instead of clothes. Then you can shop in Southampton - there's a very big supermarket a short cab ride from the Grand Harbour. Stocking up on snacks, toiletries and school supplies there will save you lots of weight and room.
ReplyDeleteHi Marjorie! Thanks for the tip on the packing here. Its very helpful to know that there is a store nearby the GH hotel. I'll definitely save space for more clothes then!
ReplyDeleteMarjorie's right...look for Asda Supermarket. Great place to stock up on toiletries and liquid items.
ReplyDeleteAlso, a few other notes. If you want to save space, the cabins come with Kleenex and I believe the ship medical ward will hand out free Meclazine.
ReplyDeleteAnd so you don't waste your tape, ship security will confiscate your duct tape.
The only thing I would add is consider buying a drybag for your electronics. Already having lost two phones to water while travelling, it comes in handy during your independent travel since we are always close to water
Thanks Michael for the suggestions and the name of the supermarket - I'll definitely stop by there for supplies before boarding the ship. About the duct tape, I was going to bring it to avoid the slamming of drawers during rough seas. Is there a better remedy for that? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteNo problem! The drawers are very secure in the nightstand and the closet doors near the cabin door snap secure when they are closed. In the roughest seas, I've never noticed the drawers opening on their own. The only thing to worry about is the loose items you place on top of the nightstand and the desk/vanity.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of...if you plan to use your laptop on the desk, be sure to bring/put something soft on top of the hard surface first to quell the ship vibrations. The vibrations will vary in intensity depending on which deck you are living on. Many students and IT staff blame these vibrations as the cause for hard drives crashing mid-semester. If you place your laptop directly on a hard surface you run the risk of those vibrations affecting the spinning hard drive, so just be sure to always leave your laptop on a soft surface or your bed.
That was just my experience..it happened to my laptop and at least 10-15 other students on my voyage. May be coincidence, but better safe than sorry.
Thanks for the laptop tip Michael! Geez - I had no idea vibrations would affect laptops. It would really suck to lose my hard drive on a trip like this - especially since I'll be teaching. I guess I should bring a back up external drive just in case. Good tip!
